Chapter 2 Excerpt

There's a Better Way!

I think being a young adult is one of the most exciting times in a person's life with almost unlimited possibilities. This can also make it one of the hardest periods in one's life. On the positive side, you have your whole adult life in front of you. You have almost unlimited possibilities and options. You have a ton of youthful energy. You can take risks because you have fewer obligations and little to lose. You are or will be moving away from home, able to make your own decisions and become your own person. You get to decide where you want to live, what you want to do for work, who you will marry or choose not to get married and if you will have children. How will you spend your free time? What will you stand for? What kind of person will you be? What experiences will you have? In other words, what are you going to do with the rest of your life, now that you have the opportunity to decide? Remember all those times when you were a kid and were asked, “What are you going to be when you grow up?” Well, now you get to answer that question.

At this age, you have freedom of choice to a degree that you're not likely to see ever again in your lifetime. That's a pretty heavy statement, but it's true. The adult world in modern America can be a pretty tough place. When you have a job, mortgage, bills, spouse and children, it is much harder to change things. That's why if you do things right early on, you can set yourself up for an awesome future. If you do things wrong, you will start on a track that becomes very difficult to reverse.

Young adults have two choices on how to approach the future. You can do it the normal way. I call this the trial-and-error method, also known as the proverbial school of hard knocks. Or, you can design and build a life around your values and passions (what matters most to you and what you enjoy doing the most). You will do this with a plan and a system.  Let's take a look at the trial-and-error method. Unfortunately, this is by far the most common approach people take as they move into the real world. Let's see how well this method is working . . .
